Our climate changes quickly, with consequences for environmental conditions: more often we see extremely wet weather or prolonged periods of draught, water levels rise and salt water intrudes our rivers. The Netherlands and four other countries bundled their forces in the Interreg NorthSea project Climate Proof Areas. From 2008 till 2011 they worked on a common goal: to make sure we learn to adapt to the the consequences of climate change: Houtekamer & Van Kleef supported the international cooperation and managed the process of the pilot area Schouwen-Duiveland.
Climate Proof Areas is the type of project we love to be part of. It's aimed at connecting groups of people and (international) plans to reach a common goal: a safe and sustainable environment for everyone in the North Sea region.
The Province of Zeeland, the community of Schouwen-Duiveland, Rijkswaterstaat Zeeland and Deltares were the Dutch project partners. Besides coordinating the Dutch pilot, we supported the coordination of the international pilots and composed the final brochures. Ultimately we composed recommendations for long term policy for climate adaptation on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland. These have been adopted by the local government in their long term vision for their island.
More information about the project can be found on this website www.climateproofareas.com, in this brochure about the pilot Schouwen-Duiveland and in this "Time to adapt: 8 pilots that show you how" about the complete European project.
