Climate Adaptation Test for Municipalities

Client: Municipalities

Climate changes brings about consequences that affect all of us. Governments are obliged to map these consequences, and to take action if possible. The climate test is the first step in dealing with climate change on the municipal level.

The Netherlands has already begun to experience the effects of climate change, as climatological phenomena such as flooding due to long or heavy showers, rising temperatures and extreme drought have become more prevalent.

The Delta Programme for 2018 was presented on Prinsjesdag, the state opening of Parliament, in September 2017. For the first time, it comprises a Delta Plan on Spatial Adaptation: a collective plan set down by municipalities, district water boards, provinces, and the national government to expedite and intensify the fight against waterlogging, heat stress, drought, and the impact of urban flooding. Go to the Delta Plan on Spatial Adaptation.

We, Houtekamer & van Kleef have assisted the municipalities of Borsele and Reimerswaal in the execution of a climate test. This test was designed to map vulnerabilities in the face of climate change, as well as potential solutions.
